Flower Power

I learned something yesterday as my sons and I studied pollination.  I learned that if it were not for nectar, flowers could easily self-pollinate, resulting in genetic clones.  But nectar helps to ensure that the pollen from one flower reaches the stigma and eventually the ovary of another flower, resulting in seeds that are the product of both parent flowers rather than just one.  Insects, birds, and bats are attracted to the sweet nectar, carrying pollen from one flower to the next;  thus, the resulting seeds are not identical to either original flower.

I told my sons that this is just proof that God likes variety.  I think that is true of people, too.
