Learn Nothing Day

I will be back to blogging about The Jerusalem Council with my next post.  But today, I have to take time to celebrate Learn Nothing Day, the "official" unschooling holiday.

We celebrate Learn Nothing Day every year.  It's a lot of fun to show ourselves that it truly is impossible to learn absolutely nothing.

I remember the year I had a home-based daycare.  I told the kids we could celebrate Learn Nothing Day.  Of course, I got a lot of "What's that!??"  I explained that Learn Nothing Day is a day to show ourselves that, no matter how hard we try, we are going to learn something.  So we decided to just go to the park that day.  Sounds safe enough.  Not much to learn there, right?

Lo and behold, there were some other kids at the park.  All of the kids began playing together.  First failure: they learned the names of the other kids.  They met new people and made new friends.

There were more absolute failures throughout the day.  And we counted and discussed each of them that afternoon.

Learn Nothing Day just shows that all of us (kids and adults) do not have to be forced and coerced into learning.  We learn naturally everyday - even if we have a holiday in which we are specifically trying not to learn.
