The Deceitfulness of Riches

If there is anything that bothers me about so much of today's society, it is the ideology of the trust in riches - in wealth - that is so prevalent.  To some people, everything centers on the accumulation of money.  This philosophy teaches that what constitutes success is money.  What makes a good political leader is the accumulation of wealth.  What makes society worth-while is how much money it generates.

Money is not what makes a life or a leader or a society.  The treatment of those deemed less important, the treatment of those who do not have that wealth - that is what determines success.  That is the basis of a worth-while life.

This ideology is the result of deceitfulness of riches, as mentioned by Christ in Mark 4:19.  Those who are deceived by riches cannot fully embrace the Word of God, the faith on which that which has come to be known as Christianity should be based.  Unfortunately,  even much of what we know as Christianity today has fallen into the trap of riches - as was prophesied in II Timothy 3:1-7.

The deceitfulness of riches is a powerful deceit that entraps even the most faithful.  This deceit is one of the greatest tricks of the enemy of our souls.  It is designed to pull our trust away from God, our Provider, and toward the coldness of an idol.  This idol is more powerful than all of the idols of Baal combined.  Money pulls the heart of humanity away from what God deems important.  The love of money is the corruption of human beings.
