Nothing New Under the Sun

Yesterday for our housechurch, we continued a study we began the previous week on the writings of Solomon.  Yesterday, we dug into the first three Chapters of Ecclesiastes.

In Ecclesiastes, Solomon describes life as meaningless.  He describes it as simply a vanity.  He describes the emotional pain he feels by watching the wicked prosper.  He describes  life full of labor, but for what purpose?

Even his great wisdom had not brought him comfort.  Trying to understand why people think the way they do only frustrated him.  Giving into the folly of societal thinking only made things worse.  All is meaningless vanity.

I could relate to the words of Solomon that we read yesterday.  I often become so frustrated by the way society thinks... by the way titles are more important than people... by the way some people are always given the hard load... by the way some can to do no wrong while others are blamed for everything that goes wrong.  I often conclude with a "What's the point?"

What's the point of trying?  What's the point of doing your best work, when that means you'll just be given more work to do from those who couldn't care less about work ethic?  What's the point of trying for new positions in life when the ones that will be chosen are chosen due to who they know rather than what they know?  What's the point of dreaming when dreams never come true?  What's the point of it all?

I still do not have the answers I am seeking to society's problems, but it's one of those times of knowing someone else gets it.  Thousands of years ago, Solomon had these same thoughts.  He had these same ideas and feelings and emotions.  Sometimes we need that.
