Housechurching - Communion

Today, we had our first communion in our housechurch.

Instead of the traditional method, we opted for celebrating a communion "meal."  After all, the last supper was a new kind of Passover meal for Jesus and His disciples - a meal that instituted the new covenant of grace.

We began by reading of the events of the last supper from Matthew and Mark.  We discussed the familiar symbolism of the bread and cup.  We discussed the meaning of a "new covenant" from what had been established by Moses and celebrated with Passover.

We then turned our attention to I Corinthians 11 and 12 and Hebrews 6.  We discussed that we are the body of Christ.  There is to be unity in the body, not discord.  Paul wrote to the Corinthian church that they were divisive.  There were arguments and fighting.  Then this early church partook of the last supper.  Since we are the body of Christ, and Christ's body has already been broken in crucifixion for our sins, we are we-breaking and re-bruising the body when divide ourselves.  As the writer of Hebrews said, we re-crucify Christ.

We discussed the importance of forgiveness, of not keep a record of one another's wrongs.  God in Christ forgives us.

Lastly, we partook of our communion meal, enjoying one another's fellowship.

What a symbolic day for us.
