Housechurching - Choices and Isaiah 53

Last night, Nathanael, our nine-year old son, requested that we partake of communion for our housechurching this week.   So we did.

Today, we read from Isaiah 53 and discussed different aspects of Jesus' sacrifice.  We discussed what it means that Jesus bore our sins and carried our sorrows.  We discussed that Jesus felt the things we are sad about.  I don't think we think of that often enough.  He discussed Him being wounded and bruised for our sins.  We discussed the promise that by His stripes we are healed.  We then talked about the statement that says the chastisement of our peace was upon Him.  First we listed synonyms and antonyms of peace.  Then we questioned if we can have peace in times of war or suffering or strife.  We agreed that we can.  We can because the chastisement of our peace was upon Him.  He gives us that peace.

I love impromptu lessons, which are the epitome of our housechurching experiences.  Today's was all because of Nathanael's choice, his request, his decision.  When kids have the power to make some of those decisions, they relate to the lessons and take ownership.  Those lessons are much more effective than adults telling them, "This is what we are going to do today."  Housechurching and unschooling really do go  hand-in-hand.
