Standing Up and Standing Out

I just saw a Facebook meme that I had to comment on.  It states a common belief that people did not care about the Confederate flag or about Cecil the lion until the media told them care about these issues.

I have a different perspective.  I believe sometimes people need their eyes opened to things they have never thought about before.

Think about it this way: we, as a society, have been stuck in a box of one-way thinking for a long time.  We have just accepted that this is the way things are.  Never questioning why.

We've never questioned why because we were taught not to question.  Questioning was disagreement, it was causing trouble, it was not respecting one's elders, it was not being peaceful.  So we just went along, pretending all was shiny and good.

We never questioned because we have been taught through America's socialization process that those who are different than the rest of the people are little weird.  They're a little bit strange.  They don't act like everyone else.  So we just decided it was better to fit in than to stand up and stand out.

I think now people are realizing it is okay to stand up and stand out.  Say what you want about the media (it definitely has its agenda and is wrong on a lot), but it has brought a new perspective.

It's a new generation.  The older generations are looking at the newer generations and saying, "I can't believe you are acting like that.  It's disgraceful."

Sometimes it's okay to be disgraceful.  Sometimes it's okay to get all worked up to help make a change that betters someone else's life or helps the environment or even helps a lion.  It's okay to see something from a different perspective.  It's okay to stand out from the crowd.  It's okay to be the one walking north when everyone else is walking south.

Sometimes when others see us walking a different direction, it makes them think, too.  It makes them think about how life is  - and if it's really the way life should be.  They start questioning, too.

Before long, a new movement forms.  A movement that makes a difference that no one thought to make before.
