Housechurching the Past Two Weeks

Things have been crazy the past couple of weeks.  I'm not sure if it is from getting ready for Thanksgiving (aka Black Friday) at work, but I have just been pooped out.  It has been too long since I have blogged.

So today, to get back into my blogging. I want to share what we have done for our housechurching for the past two weeks.

Last week, we decided on movie Bible studies.  We watched Alice in Wonderland (the newest rendition) and The Sorcerer's Apprentice.  Both are favorites of ours.  As we were watching these movies, I could not help but think of how when God calls us to do something - when He has a plan - we are going to experience confusion, just as the protagonists in both movies experienced.  They did not know what the plan even was for sure.  They just figured they could not do it.  Doesn't that sound like us?  Likewise, others will be confused about what is going on.  But just as in the movies that we watched, God always works His plan out step-by-step until we begin seeing His plan in action.

Another important thing to remember about God's plan is sometimes - most of the time - we have to do it alone.  No one could help Alice or Dave fulfill their destinies in the movies.  Likewise, we can have people who will walk beside us, who will help us see God's guidance, who can offer counsel; but God's plans are individual.  Each of us has something that we are supposed to do, that we are supposed to be.  We cannot be afraid to walk with only Him.

This week, we partook of communion to prepare for Thanksgiving.  We, of course, spoke of what it means to be thankful and thought of specific things that we are thankful for.  However, our focus was really upon grace.  Our focus Scripture was John 1:16, "And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace" (NKJV).  The NASB says, "grace upon grace."  We discussed that everything we have to be thankful for is given by God's grace.  Grace that is abundant.  Grace that never ends.

We then turned to James 4:6-10:
'God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.'  Therefore submit to God.  Resist the devil and he will flee from you.  Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.  Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.  Lament and mourn and weep!  Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.  Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up (NKJV).

We discussed why God would resist the proud but give grace to the humble.  We decided it is probably because if the proud were given grace, they would think they earned it.  They would turn it around to show their own goodness in gaining God's grace.  The humble, however, realizes there is nothing they can do to earn grace.  It is truly something to be thankful for.

Just some interesting thoughts from our housechurch these past two Sundays.
